Heaton - Newcastle upon Tyne
This modest courtyard garden was owned by a creative couple wanting to turn a drab rear concrete courtyard into a beautiful creative, naturalistic and immersive space full of planting, and a bloom filled front garden.
The design solution embraced creative use of natural materials and forms. For the rear garden we took out the concrete and installed some recycled aged Oak timbers laid diagonally and staggered timber as a raised deck. The path became a symbolic stream by using sandstone as stepping stones, interspersed with mosaic of turquoise broken tiles surrounded by woodland planting.
The wall area offered an opportunity for climbers, a tree fern, a clad wall of horizontal charred cedar wood batons using the traditional Japanese technique of Shou sugi ban. We also installed a decorative corten steel screen and a personal ornament, and patterned some bricks to create an attractive repeating pattern.
